The idea to somehow make a tape dispenser from sheet material was a little spontaneous. I guess I liked it partly because it would be an object that was fully functional and not too hard to make.
I was also not confident that it would look especially good, so functionality was a priority for me on this project.
So basically my goal was to somehow celebrate sheet material qualities by focusing on how the 2D-ness of the material could be transformed into a totally functional 3D tape dispenser, aesthetics were secondary.
After tossing around concepts with chunky slots, hollow shapes and flimsy materials, I was given the idea of simply layering the material to create the 3d dimensional shape. I went with this suggestion because it would be stronger, thus more functional, and wouldn't require form-fouling slots everywhere, so would look better too.
The choice of clear acrylic was based on the need to see how much tape is left on the role, plus the strength and thickness properties of it. Perhaps a translucent colour would have fulfilled that need too. Nevertheless, I think the way the light bounces around inside the clear acrylic layers is pretty nice.
Wow, it looks like something I would buy off the shelf. Only problem would be I don't usually have a screwdriver around all the time when I need to refill the tape.

After seeing this product develop from the very beginning I can really say that I love how it has turned out. The fact that function has dictated the final shape and look as well as the material is my favourite feature.
ReplyDeleteSome suggestions for possible improvement would include adding colour to some of the edges as well as using a more aesthetically pleasing screw to connect the individual pieces.
I think that this product is very aesthetically pleasing. The form it has taken on is not only a reflection of the product it holds (the tape) but also how the product is to be used and yet it is still a very nice form.
ReplyDeleteA suggestion for improvement would be to make the cutting mechanism smaller, it seems a little out of place and also making the bolt flush with the product would add to that smooth and sleek look. All in all, a very nice, smooth exclusive looking product!
I quite like your idea of making such an applied and nice thing. I think the material you chose for this product is suitable and it is good that the receiver can quickly assemble your product and find how wonderful it is. I believe when the receiver receive such a gift, he/she will be so happy and keep it on the table or anywhere else all the time.
ReplyDeleteOne thing you need to improve you product. I think your poster is lack of attractive and I cannot see your instruction sheet clearly. Why not to add more colors to your product?
I really like the styling of this design. The lines and the curves make it an attractive piece that you'd like to display. I think it could be improved by making it out of coloured transparent acrylic.

I have to say this was the one that effectively gave me that surprise as I watched it get assembled. At first, i was really worried about the parts while it was still in its packaging, mainly because it was the clash between the white and the clear acrylic, which caused it to be quite bland on first impressions. As i saw the pieces stack together one by one, i could see that each piece was giving the product more life.
