Upcycling. project 3

I tried to make a lamp shade out of the bottom of cans. Originally it was meant to be a more spherical shape but in the end I couldn't get the tensions to work right. The project was actually a little intimidating because I had a lot of trouble visualising how it would work. In the end it turned out okay.

The choice of material was primarily based on the ubiquitous nature of cans and the clean shiny surface you can get from them. I concentrated on limiting how much of the label surface was visible to the user so that also dictated the form.

  1. The idea is quite good and new.The pattern of the shade looks beautiful too. The material is suitable and it works well.

  2. Interesting shape, movement and texture. The gold coloured rivets used to join the pieces really worked well against the silver metal. Looks very weird /extra-terrestrial when lit. (which I like). Good recycling/upcycling.

  3. A good example of up-cycling old or used cans found. The shape that you've made out of these cans compliments the material well. The appeal of the object changes at night when the light is turned on and the cans surfaces work there magic and reflect the light to a certain aesthetic appeal

  4. This is an interspersing demonstration of upcycling in that you have challenged the form of the can yet you have highlighted some of its key features. By exposing the internal surface of the can you have utilised a very elegant surface that can remain untreated.

I would like to see you use more material, the surface enhances the light so you can afford to block more out. I appreciate that cans would not always come in pristine conditions but could the irregular and crumpled surfaces enhance the light effects? What effects can you create by puncturing holes in the surface?

Structurally I like this product even if it you weren't able to achieve your original idea. Although I would like to see a greater percentage of the can used.

  5. The idea is quite interesting and the final design looks good although I would of liked to see more use of the can material. If you would of done that then I think it could have developed into a more interesting and more aesthetically pleasing design. But in its current design state, it has some good qualities of how the lights shines through the material.

  6. The idea is quite interesting; the model could be very impressive if you could polish the cans by Brasso.
